James Attlee
As a writer I have concentrated on exploring the territory that immediately surrounds us and which therefore gets overlooked. I cling to the belief that almost any location, if we give it enough attention, will reveal itself to be full of interest. I wrote a book called Isolarion, about taking a journey down a multi-cultural street in my own neighbourhood. Why go to the other side of the world, I asked, when the world has come to you? In Nocturne: A Journey in Search of Moonlight, I focused on the moon and the light it casts, re-forging a connection broken by light pollution and the frenetic pace of modern life. Although both these books were largely researched on foot, they were written up on the train I took to work each morning.
My most recent book was Guernica: Painting the End of the World, which traces the story of one of the 20th century’s best-known paintings from its creation in 1937 to the present day.
North Sea: A Visual Anthology was published by Thames & Hudson on 30 March 2017.
